Run a Peer Learning Circle With a Shared Reading List

Most learning circles die the same way. Not from lack of interest, but from scattered links. Someone drops an article in a group chat, three people star it, and it's gone by Thursday.

The problem isn't your group's motivation. It's that you never built a shared place to put the things worth reading. Chat is a river; learning needs a library.

This piece walks through how to run a peer learning circle around a shared reading list — one where the group controls what gets added, everyone can catch up on their own time, and no algorithm decides what your cohort sees next.

Why group chats fail as a reading system

Group chats are optimized for conversation, not retention. A link shared in chat competes with memes, logistics, and "sorry I'm running late" — and loses within hours.

Research on how people handle saved content is blunt about this. Studies of "read-it-later" behavior have repeatedly found that the vast majority of saved articles are never actually read; the act of saving becomes a substitute for reading. A learning circle that relies on chat inherits that same failure at group scale.

There's also a curation problem. When your circle's reading depends on whatever a social feed surfaces, you've handed the syllabus to an engagement-optimized ranking system. That system rewards outrage and novelty, not depth or relevance to your group's goals.

A shared reading list flips the arrangement. The list is the durable artifact. The chat becomes commentary about the list, not the list itself. What your circle reads is decided by your circle — deliberately, in one visible place.

Design the reading list before you recruit members

A good circle has a spine. Before inviting anyone, decide what the list is for and how items get on it.

Pick a scope narrow enough to finish

"AI" is not a scope. "Practical prompting techniques for non-engineers, one article a week for eight weeks" is. A narrow scope makes the reading list feel completable, which is what keeps people coming back.

Adult learning research has long emphasized that grown learners engage most when material is immediately relevant and problem-centered rather than abstract. Malcolm Knowles' work on andragogy, summarized well by the Association for Talent Development, makes this point repeatedly: adults want to apply what they read, not collect it.

Agree on who can add items

Decide early whether your list is curated by one facilitator or open to everyone. Both work, but ambiguity kills momentum. A common pattern: the facilitator seeds the core list, and members propose additions in a dedicated lane the group reviews weekly.

Keep a "why this" note on every entry

The single highest-leverage habit is requiring one sentence of context per item: why does this belong on our list? That sentence turns a link dump into a curated syllabus and tells busy members whether to prioritize a piece.

Feed subscriptions keep the list alive without babysitting

A static reading list goes stale. The circles that last treat their list as a living feed, not a frozen syllabus.

This is where feed subscriptions matter. Instead of manually hunting for new material, your circle subscribes to the sources it already trusts — a handful of blogs, a newsletter or two, maybe a specific author. New items flow in automatically, and the group triages them into the shared list.

An RSS feed reader is the quiet workhorse here. RSS is an open standard that predates the algorithmic feed, and it does exactly one thing: deliver everything a source publishes, in order, with nothing hidden or reranked. As Wikipedia's overview of RSS explains, it lets you follow many sources in one place without handing your attention to a recommendation engine.

That "nothing hidden" property is the whole point for a learning circle. You want the complete output of the sources you chose, not a machine's guess about which three posts will maximize your time-on-site. Curation stays with humans who share your goals.

The practical setup is simple. Import an OPML file of shared feeds so every member starts from the same source list. Route trusted newsletters into the same inbox. Then the weekly ritual becomes triage, not discovery: skim what came in, promote the two or three items worth the group's time, and archive the rest.

Make the list something people actually consume

Curating a great list is only half the job. If members can't fit the reading into their week, participation quietly collapses.

Give people multiple ways to get through the material. Some will read on a laptop; others only have time on a commute or a walk. Offering the option to read articles by listening removes the biggest excuse — "I didn't have time to sit and read" — because listening slots into moments reading can't.

The audience for this is larger than people assume. National literacy surveys, including data compiled by the U.S. National Center for Education Statistics, show a meaningful share of adults struggle with dense text; audio is not a luxury for them, it's access. Add readers with dyslexia, ADHD, or long screen-fatigued workdays, and audio becomes a participation multiplier for your circle.

Highlights and annotations do the other half. When a member marks the passage that changed their mind, that highlight becomes discussion fuel for your next meeting. A shared layer where people can highlight and annotate web articles turns solitary reading into a visible, collective thought process — you see where the group's attention landed before anyone says a word.

A simple weekly cadence

• Monday: facilitator confirms the week's one or two required items on the shared list.
• Midweek: members read or listen, highlighting as they go.
• Friday or meeting day: discuss the highlights, then triage incoming feed items into next week's list.

That rhythm is light enough to sustain for months and structured enough that nobody wonders what they're supposed to be reading.

Keep curation human, not algorithmic

The deeper reason to build your own shared reading layer is independence. When your circle's inputs come from a personalized social feed, two members scrolling the same platform see different worlds — and your shared context erodes.

A shared list plus explicit feed subscriptions gives everyone the same inputs. That common ground is what makes discussion productive; you're all reacting to the same eight articles, not to whatever an algorithm decided each of you should see.

It also protects the circle from drift. Trending-story engines are built to maximize attention, and attention isn't the same thing as learning. By choosing your sources deliberately and reviewing additions as a group, you keep the syllabus pointed at your actual goal instead of the day's most clickable outrage.

None of this requires heavy tooling. It requires one visible place to save, subscribe, and discuss — a content layer your group owns.

Bringing it together

A peer learning circle succeeds when reading stops being scattered and becomes shared: a narrow scope, a living list fed by trusted subscriptions, and formats that let every member actually get through the material. Keep curation in human hands, and the group stays aligned around the same content week after week.

If you want that shared content layer — a place to save articles, subscribe to feeds, highlight together, and even listen to the list on the go — Omphalis was built for exactly this kind of reading circle. Set up your list, invite your people, and let the group decide what's worth reading next.
